According to researchers from the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), approximately 27 million tons of nanoplastics, which are plastic particles smaller than one micrometer, are present in the North Atlantic Ocean, surpassing the amount of larger plastics found in all oceans. The study indicates that these nanoplastics are pervasive throughout the ocean ecosystem, posing potential risks to marine life and human health, and highlights the urgent need to prevent further plastic pollution.
